Proofreading and editing

Nothing is more damaging to corporate image and professionalism than poor English, confusing grammar and spelling errors – even just inconsistent style.

Publishing and editing conventions are complex and house styles vary widely across industries and professions.

Not everyone can necessarily expect to be up-to-date with every single point, and many people simply do not have the time to go through documents with a fine-toothed comb.

Babylon translations provides high-quality professional proofreading and editing services. We offer a flexible, tailor-made service to meet your specific requirements.

Our editor:

  • Has extensive experience in a variety of sectors, ranging from academic publications to leading finance and telecoms companies
  • Is a fully qualified and member of the UK’s Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP)
  • Holds a Master’s degree from the University of Oxford

Material handled

We can process all kinds of copy:

  • Website content
  • Business, financial and legal documents
  • Press releases
  • Speeches
  • Correspondence
  • Promotional and marketing material (brochures, leaflets etc.)
  • Dissertations and academic papers
  • Conference agendas, notes and speeches
  • Articles
  • Magazines
  • Books (fiction and non-fiction)
  • Scripts/plays

We offer a range of services to meet your specific requirements.

Proofreading is suitable for documents that are already in excellent shape and simply need a final review to pick up any typos, minor spelling/grammar/punctuation errors, and formatting issues.
The difference between proofreading and editing essentially lies in the quality of the content: proofreading looks at the same points as editing, but presumes that little interference will be required.

Editing involves making much more invasive changes than proofreading, and looks at:

  • Structure – style (breakdown or overly long sentences/paragraphs)
  • Structure – sense (logical framework of the subject matter, headings)
  • Captions
  • Capitalisation
  • Clarity
  • Grammar
  • Spelling
  • Punctuation
  • Repetition
  • Vocabulary
  • Consistency
  • Bullets and numbered lists
  • Numbers, dates, currencies
  • Charts and diagrams
  • Formatting

Level of editing will depend on the quality of the copy. Documents requiring only minimal intervention will benefit from a Light editing service, whereas content that needs more work will fall under the Substantive editing bracket. Documents written by a foreign person, unless their English is extremely fluent, will fall under the second category.

US/UK English

The United Kingdom and the United States, whilst using the same language, do employ a different set of writing conventions and occasionally different terminology. These are quite specific and technical and most people would not be expected to be familiar with them.
Please specify which writing convention you wish applied to your documents. Conversely, we can also offer the service of converting one style into another (UK to US or vice versa).

Translations/content written by a foreign author

Some translations simply need a fluent touch, or perhaps some of your documents have been written by someone whose mother tongue is not English. Run your documents through a standard editing service and have your documents naturalised into smooth, context-specific and current English.

Hard copy/on-screen editing

Nowadays, the majority of all proofreading and editing work is carried out on screen. We do however offer the option to edit on hard copy if this is necessary.

We can take documents in the following electronic formats:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Publisher
  • PDF

Track all the changes

Our on-screen proofreading and editing service employs primarily Microsoft Word and its Track Changes/Comments functions. That way, you can keep track of every single change made to your work, and queries are submitted in Word comments throughout the content.
This is a fast and cost-effective way of carrying out the work, and allows you to review every change at your leisure. Both these functions are simple to operate.
We provide you with a “clean” copy of the work and a copy containing all the track changes.

Style guides

If you have an existing house style, please send this along with your documents. If you are likely to have recurring work, a style guide can be created for you so that you do not have to answer the same queries or make the same stylistic choices over and over again, saving you time and money and creating a consistent house style for your documents.
